Student Trips to New York City: Headed to Broadway!

April 1st, 2025

At our school, we take immense pride in our robust drama department, a hub of creativity and passion for the arts. Our theater teachers, staff, and students pour their hearts into our performances. They are some of the best middle school productions I've ever experienced in my many years in education. Part of the reason these productions are so incredible is that each year, we take approximately 40-50 students to New York City for an unforgettable experience centered around Broadway.

It’s about New York City Theater

For my theater-buff students, this is the trip of a lifetime and exposes them to theater at its very best. This unique trip immerses students in the rich theater world, featuring at least three Broadway productions. Beyond the glitz of the shows, we also organize post-show "stage door" experiences, allowing students to meet the cast, ask questions, and enhance their understanding of the theater world. To complement the performances, we participate in workshops led by industry professionals. These include acting classes, behind-the-scenes tours of theaters, or even a seminar on set design and production. Such opportunities provide our students with hands-on experiences that deepen their appreciation for the craft, and most of all, they get to interact with real-life Broadway people!

It’s about the New York City Experience

Although performing arts are a focus, we set aside plenty of time for sightseeing throughout New York City. Ryan Sparzak, our enthusiastic guide for the last few years, has played a pivotal role in making this trip a resounding success. As a former NYC Educator, his ability to connect with students, share stories about the City, and express his love for New York has dramatically enriched our group tour experience. Our itinerary has iconic landmarks and experiences that showcase New York City. Students enjoy a guided walk-through of Radio City Music Hall, home to the legendary Rockettes, and explore Central Park, where they can relax by Bethesda Fountain and people-watch. There is even a stop for lunch in Little Italy; I can't remember if I’ve ever had better pasta and pizza.

It’s about those New York City Moments

An unforgettable moment from our last trip occurred after watching Wicked. We waited outside the stage door to see as much of the cast as possible, but it was a somewhat rainy and busy night, so we returned to the hotel. While we waited on the subway platform, buzzing with excitement from the performance, the group spotted one of the lead actors from Wicked, and almost all simultaneously shouted, "It's Him!" The actor signed autographs, answered questions, and took photos with the students, who were now euphoric. It was a surreal experience that truly encapsulated the magic of New York City.

Our annual student trip to New York City is about theater; it's also about creating lasting memories, fostering new friendships, and building upon the student's love for the performing arts that hopefully will stay with them for years.
